About Score
Nathan composed a piece for a clip from the original Star Trek TV series, capturing both the excitement and peril of space, reminiscent of Interstellar, The Martian, and Gravity. Inspired by Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, and Steven Price, Nathan used a blend of orchestral and electronic instruments to create a unique score that captures the soundscape of space in Star Trek.
Zimmer's influence is evident in the textural layering of violins, synthesisers, and percussion, while Gregson-Williams' techniques of digital processing and extended string effects contribute to an unusual sonic palette. Price's integration of classical orchestration and modern instruments, as well as his innovative approach, further shaped Nathan's composition.
The piece features five sections: an adventurous introduction with a grand orchestration, an ambient section symbolising wonder, a darker mystical phase, a perilous segment reflecting the dangers of space, and an optimistic outro. Key moments include a high violin ostinato in bars 7–18, achieving a bold orchestral feel; peaceful G major strings in bars 18–51, representing the glory of space; and menacing A minor strings paired with celesta and electric piano in a Dorian scale from bars 51–81, evoking anxiety.
Nathan's choice of conventional orchestral and ambient synthesisers, along with non-standard scales, aligns his piece with the evocative scores of space-themed films, while the use of a slow tempo and 3/4-time signature enriches the melancholic yet hopeful tone.
